I know it's been a while. I shall try to make this "catch up" as short and painless as possible.

First, all is well here at the Kin/Stones residence.
The same cannot be said of Nana, David's Mum who suffered a major stroke about 5 weeks ago. She is very weak, has no use of her left side limited use of her right leg, and can't speak. David went over as soon as he was able to organise a flight and stayed for a week. It was a very sad visit. Difficult seeing his Mum like this.

Yesterday, April Fools day had a very interesting yet scary start. I was in the kitchen having an early breakfast getting ready to take my Mum to Ottawa to have a cyst removed from her shoulder (more on that later) when David yelled from his bedroom "the Fox. He's chasing the cat!" Sam came racing up the cellar stairs(thank goodness for cat doors) and took to hiding. I, accompanied by Lucy raced out the front door. No sight of the Fox though. Apparently the fox looked right in David's bedroom window which is where Lucy sleeps. I think her barking must have sent him or her on her way.

Oma's surgery: Oma had a fatty cyst on her right shoulder which had grown to a significant size making it uncomfortable to sleep. So off to Ottawa we went where her Dr. removed it. I got to assist!. I helped hold the sterile covering out of the way, handed the cauterizing do hickey to her when she needed it, but mostly I watched. She froze the area, made an incision(about 2 1/2"), then proceeded to peel and sculpt the skin from the cyst until it was free and "popped" it out. Push came to shove I think I could do one of these myself.............

The ice went out of the river about a week ago. The next day the muskrat made an appearance and our Lucy we discovered is a water Dog.

I have just read Tiff's block. It was a year ago today that Ben had his stroke. Doesn't seem possible.

I babysat Carter on Fri.. Sarah who was recruited by TD bank in Westgate decided to go back to work early, given the economical climate she didn't want to lose this opportunity. David who is feeling stronger and between blood transfusions (the weekly injections of Eprex seem to be working), gave me the chance to go to Smiths Falls for the day. What a bonnie lad. He wasn't at his best ( a bottom tooth came through on Sat.) but he tried so hard not to be miserable. I would set him down and he would go between trying to smile but wanting to cry. Anyway lots of TLC got us through the day. My, how his face lit up when his Mum came home.

Barbara has been to Ottawa twice to the Cancer Clinic. The chemo oncologist feels chemo is not an option, "the risks far outweigh the benefits because of the MS. So it looks like radiation. We have a second appointment with Dr. Kendal (radiologist)on Feb 18. Many thanks to friends and family for helping with ideas and suggestions we are ready (as much as one can be) and armed with questions. Nancy W sent an email telling us of a Tumour Board/Committee who will review your case if you are dissatisfied with your options. We are also going to contact Dr. Freedman MS nuerologist to get him on board and his opinion and I am going to send an email to my cousin who is a radiation oncologist in Chertsy near Surrey in England. Not sure how he can help but it doesn't hurt to cover all our bases.

Long time no blog. The main reason being, Barbara was diagnosed with rectal cancer. There was no mention on the blog as we did not want to worry Emma away at Uni to cope with the news without family for support. So I think the best way to catch up is to post my "christmas" letter which I finally managed to write.

January 2009

It has been a Yin-Yang year for us and the reason for my not being able to send my letter and Christmas wishes. The Christmas decorations have been put away and the children and Grandchildren have come and gone. Life is returning to a more normal pace. I promised myself that I would send our news in the New Year. I know how much I enjoy and appreciate the news from family and friends and so I am thinking, better late than never.
We have had considerable health issues of late but I wish to start on a positive note so I will get to those details later.
The highlight of my year…….I am a Grammy!!!! Sarah and Joe had a baby boy July 11. Carter Stuart Simpson! And what a delight he is. It is true what they say, Grand kids are wonderful, I don’t need to be responsible for making sure he grows up to be a fine young man, that is Sarah and Joe’s job, all I have to do is Love and enjoy him and that is so easy. Sarah is such a wonderful Mum and she makes me proud. I don’t think I have seen a Mum so “in tune” with her baby. It is pure joy watching the both of them. She is absolutely besotted with him and he with her. And he is such a happy baby. His smile lights the room and your heart. The day after Christmas, Sarah, Joe and Carter flew to Texas to visit Joe’s Dad who winters down there. They had two connections; (three planes) and Master Carter proved to be an avid flyer. He smiled and baby talked for the entire journey there and back much to the delight and relief of the passengers and flight attendants.
Another highlight for me in 2008 was driving with Emma to Sackville New Brunswick where she is attending Mount Allison University (#1 again in the MacLean’s magazine annual issue on Uni’s). It is a 12 hour drive through some beautiful “Down East “country. It was lovely spending this time with Emma, a bit sad leaving her though. I am so very proud of her accomplishments. She is supporting herself financially and is doing remarkably well, as well as being very happy at Mount A. She flew home for Christmas and much to my delight she read all the Christmas letters I had received and showed an interest in who was who. It was wonderful having her back if only for a short time.

Soon after I posted last years missive Robbie called to tell me his professor had recommended him to Hydro One. Within a month he had been interviewed, hired and had moved to Barrie (the snow belt of Ontario). He has completed his 6 month probation and passed his exams close to the top of his class. As a controller for the provinces electrical power he has considerable responsibility and according to Robbie the training he has received and the position he holds is well thought of throughout the world, leaving many possibilities open to him. His girlfriend Veronica graduated this December from Ottawa U and she has moved to Barrie to be with him. After working a bit she hopes to continue her studies in Toronto and get her Masters.
Anna graduated from high school in June, bringing to a close another chapter of my life. 25 years of teacher’s interviews and Christmas concerts. The concerts I will miss but not the interviews. Right after school Anna started working in a telemarketing company. In November she left Startek and was hired part time at an upscale clothing store here in Cornwall. They hired her full time after the holidays, a credit to her in these hard economic times. She still lives at home….. when she is not at her boyfriend’s. We see her when she needs to do laundry! The highlight of Anna’s year, she has been given a horse. Dexter is blind in one eye and the owners were looking for a good home for him . Anna is thrilled.
Even more wonderful news. In August Scott proposed to Jen. When he called to tell me I asked if she said yes and with a smile in his voice he said “I didn’t give her a chance to say no”! The wedding is August 1. I couldn’t be happier. Jen is a Love and the best thing that has happened to Scott.
Once again Barbara and David’s children and grand kids made their annual visit this summer. It is a busy but wonderful time. All the grandkids together and this year of course there was my Carter.
Now for the yin part of my letter. In October Barbara was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. She had surgery November 20 and now has a colostomy. We anticipated a long recovery, expecting the surgery to exacerbate the MS, but Barbara recuperated extremely well. We have been to Ottawa to the cancer Center several times and are waiting for a schedule for radiation. Unfortunately chemo is not an option because of the MS.
David is still coping with polychondritis and has also been diagnosed with myelodysplasia (his bone marrow is not producing enough red blood cells) and so he requires regular blood transfusions. Murphy’s Law kicked in and poor David had a polychondritis attack and his hemoglobin was so low he required two transfusions within three weeks and all this while Barbara was in hospital.
Suffice to say October, November and December were very trying months.
Mum continues to do well and has been a great source of strength and support to us.
Ingrid continues to battle on. She visited this summer and was here when her grand nephew was born.
Life continues here at the Kin/Stones residence. We have daily walk bys from a fox; the birds at the feeders still entertain us(we have two pairs of Cardinals this year) as do the cats and dogs. Yes plural for dog. The nurse visiting Barbara post surgery had taken in a stray. One thing led to another and we ended up adopting her. She is part Australian shepherd, one blue and one brown eye and her name is Lucy. And it suits her. She is blonde and white and is such a “girlie” dog. A proper Mrs. Busslebum, has to know everyone’s business.
Barbara and I discovered a Yoga video for people in wheelchairs, I have to admit I was skeptical about yoga to begin with and I can’t get over how successful this program has been for Barbara as well as myself. So much that we gave my Mum and Ingrid one for Christmas.
I haven’t been able to get out and exercise this past year as it was difficult to leave Barbara alone, fortunately my health has been good and I have been able to cope. I have taken up cross stitch and have finished a lovely Beatrix Potter Birth Sampler for Carter and have started on a Christmas stocking for him. I am looking for a suitable wedding Sampler for Scott and Jen.
There has not been time to keep up with my blogging, hopefully that will change.

I am off to babysit Carter tomorrow. My first time. Have the boxes with sample T-shirts and more gifts from the ladies packed and ready to go. I found an adorable my first Christmas sleeper for Carter at the GT Boutique. Not your traditional red, a lovely hunter green in velour with appliqued Santas on the toes. Very masculine!!!!!

Em comes home on the 14th. Yeah!!!!!

Dom and Alix are coming to stay for a week on the 15th and boy do we have a list of things for him to do!!!!!!!!! Margaret is travelling down by train on the Fri. and we will have a special Christmas with them on Saturday.

And, Sarah has organised a special Christmas gift for Oma. On the 19th we girls are going to go and organise, clean and dust Oma's house for her and then do the "tree", all so she won't feel overwhelmed and feel comfy having people over for the holidays.

Anna has been "given" a horse!! Dexter is blind in one eye; his owner had him up for sale. He has decided to give him to Anna. They are going to sign a contract (he is a lawyer). The terms: Anna cannot sell him or make profit of any kind. If she can no longer care for Dex he wants him back. Guess he wants to make sure Dex does not end up being mistreated.

Remembrance Day:My Dad Left An Impression

Barbara and I did a minute of remembering shortly after 11a.m.

My Dad didn't have an active part in the war but was a member of the home guard. He did have several siblings who were soldiers, my uncle George who became a teacher and had two sons one a Dr.(graduate of Oxford) and the other a pilot for BOAC. My Uncle Fred was a prisoner of war and became an Anglican minister his twin sons have positions in banks and his daughter Anne is a rental manager for a Trust that runs housing for people who experience chronic mental illness.

I was about 12 years old and at home for Remembrance Day because we had a "holiday" from school. I was glad of the day off but it was my Dad who put the day into perspective for me. He was outside on what is traditionally a cold day stapling plastic to the windows getting ready for winter. At 11 o'clock he stopped and remembered. It left a profound impression.
A day off does not make people remember. However schools, businesses, people stopping together is somehow more significant.

Barbara and I are off to the Rehab in Ottawa today. Finally Dr. Freedman has shown an interest in Barbara and has referred her to rehab in hopes that they can secure funds for an electric wheelchair. We are are going to ask about them about vehicle modification http://www.bruno.com/carony.html.
I have just been out to fetch the papers and discovered the bee's nest that was in the ground in my folly (the one I mowed over and was subsequently attacked on mass) has been dug up. Probably by a raccoon or skunk.
We have had two heavy frosts and now it is raining. The "shag" carpet is now looking well used!!!!!!

We then went out to the Gemini for dinner. The first time eating out since Emma and Anna's Graduation dinner in June.
Enjoyed it so much we are going to eat out again tonight.

It is St. Mary's fall dinner, and our usual Sunday dinner quests are going there. The bathroom facilities are not wheelchair accessible so we are going to City Limits. They have a good bathroom. Expect Mum and Audrey P. will join us.

The leaves have fallen en mass and our garden looks like a 70's shag carpet. Would include a photo but David has the camera.

What a lovely Thanksgiving we have had. The weahther was perfect, sunshine, sunshine and more sunshine. We even sat out in the summerhouse most of the afternoon. Dom Margaret and Alix arrived late Fri night and Sarah anad Carter arrived Saturday night. Saturday Barbara Alix and I along with Pup walked to the village for an ice cream. Saturday night we celebrated Alix's 4th BD.

Sandra and Ian joined us along with Oma. Sarah and Carter spent the night at Oma's and we are expecting them back here soon. Margaret and Alix have returned to toronto to have Thanksgiving dinner with Margarets parents but not before Alix having a romp in the leaves.

Oma returned from Austria yesterday. She had a wonderful time. Visited with lots of old friends and was happy to be there for Sabine's wedding. Unfortunately she had a bit of a tumble off the bike and her leg was quite inflamed and swollen. Fortunately her Dr. in Ottawa was able to see her this morning. She aspirated her knee and increased the antibiotics.

David was interviewed today by Norman Fetterly of CJOH in the Byward Market and as a result was honoured with considerable "air time".

Barbara and I have been doing this yoga routine for about 3 weeks now. I am absolutely amazed at how this gentle exercise program is proving to be quite effective. It takes about an hour, the repetitions are no more than 4 and yet they made us aware of the muscles in our body. I haven't had to "crack" my back in the morning to relieve the discomfort.
Barbara can't get over how good it makes her feel and that we have found a program she can do.

The leaves are starting to fall. And we all know what that mean!

Barbara went to see a General Surgeon last Tues. and is scheduled for a colonoscopy Oct 10.

David has been suffering with another polychondritis attack. He spent about four days with a very painful "head" (not a headache) that left him wishing he didn't have a head. As well as an attack in his hip which had him limping. He spent most of the time sleeping or keeping his head very still. He now has another pain in his chest and is on his way yet again to see Dr Edgar and possibly another xray.( By the way you did not read this on my blog).

I spent the day with Sarah last Tues. We went to Carters Dr. appointment together (Carter is 15 lbs 6 oz.) and in the afternoon I looked after Carter while Sarah went to the dentist. We then showed him off to all Sarahs associates and friends at the Westgate Mall.

Robbie was in Ottawa for the weekend and visited with Sarah and Carter Fri. night

Mum has called several times from Austria and seems to be having a good time. Mum says the wedding was beautiful despite the rain. Congratulations to Sabine and Leo.

The weather here is beautiful. Our Indian Summer??

Emma is enjoying Mount A tremendously. She went to listen the guest lecturer Lester Brown an environmentalist and was most impressed by the man. She is working hard every time I call she is reading!!!!

We shall miss her for Thanksgiving.

Sarah is thinking of taking Carter out for Halloween, (to Poppa's only) as a turtle because she thinks he looks like one.

Where does the time go? David is back from Quebec and still recovering from his pneumonia/bronchitis. Em is loving Mount A. We had a lovely visit on Wednesday with Sarah and Carter. Hope he doesn't catch the miserable cold I had while he was here.

David is recovering nicely from pneumonia, Mum/Oma has arrived safely in Austria.

And Emma starts her first day of classes at Mount A. (Em and I are playing a game of Scrabble by email.)

During the day Sarah reads to Carter when he is nursing. So far he has been introduced to Ken Follett and now a Canadian author Gilles Blunt. At bedtime she reads 3 or 4 children's books to him.

It's official...... Emma is a Mountie, a Mount Allison Mountie. We arrived in Sackville at 6.p.m. Wednesday.( a 12 hour drive).

Emma took me on a tour of Sackville which took all of 15 min. seeing as how Sackville is so Big!!!!! Had dinner and then returned to our Hotel to unpack half of the van because Emma was a "little" apprehensive about all the stuff she had brought and worried about her pile of stuff that would be left at the door when we did the "drop and park". As it turned out she needn't of worried but it made her feel better.

Moving into Harper Hall was virtually painless and Emma soon made friends. As a matter of fact I called her this morning but she didn't have time to talk because she had a room full of fellow Harponians. Couldn't of been happier. It was a wonderful to hear the sound of voices in the back ground.

On Thurs. night we enjoyed a BBQ which was mostly Gluten Free and Emma was given the choice of two..two desserts. i think she just might be eating better at Uni than at home.

We look forward to our Sunday dinners with family and friends and I can’t think of a better way to show Emma how much she is thought of and loved than having everyone here who has played an important part in helping Emma be who she is .

Bill and Linda, Missy, Melanie, thanks for being here and thanks for the support you have given over the years.

Nancy and Michael, Emma has spoken often of how welcoming and comfortable you have made her feel in your home. I am grateful . Thank you.

Sandra, Thank you for being understanding and sympathetic during our times of teenage and mother/daughter angst.

Earl How wonderful to have you here again for a Sunday dinner. Because of you Emma and Anna had opportunities available they wouldn’t have had otherwise. Your support made a difficult time easier for us. I shall always appreciate the positive influence you have given Emma.

Anna how lucky you and Emma are to have each other. Although there have been times when you were thoroughly “pissed off” with each other I know there have been just as many times when you have helped each other through difficult times only as a sister could.

Sarah Emma couldn’t want for a better older sister. All those desperate phone calls. How many times have you been there? More than I know about I’m sure. Your support has always been fair and honest and invaluable.

Oma, You have always been there. No matter what we have thrown at you, no matter how difficult…..You have always come through. I am forever grateful.

Barbara, Thank you for helping to give Emma a warm and comfortable home. I am so grateful she has had you to talk to. You have played an important role in Emma becoming the person she is.

David, thank you to you also for providing a wonderful home for Emma. You have always been there, giving, whatever was needed…….. very happily embarrassing Emma even when she begged you not to!!!!!!!

Derek, You have made Emma feel special. You have made her happy. Thank you!!!!!

Scott called last Saturday to say he proposed to Jen. I asked if she said yes and he said he didn't give her a chance to say no. I also asked if he got down on his knee and he groaned, so you can decide for yourself.

David went to see the hematologist yesterday to hear about the results of his bone marrow test. He has been diagnosed with myelodyplasia. Essentially the bone marrow is shutting down. Like the polychondritis there is little know about the disease. He is going for a blood transfusion on Mon. That should make him feel better. The hematologist has taken him off the Methotrexate so for the first weekend in months he has been able to do more than sleep the weekend away. Time will tell how the polychondritis will behave without the Methotrexate and if the hemoglobin levels will improve.

It has been incredibly busy for the last month and I'm not sure where to begin and I'm afraid I will forget something so I shall let the photos do the talking.

July 14 we made a "journey" to see Little Carter who was 3 days old.

We had two wheelchairs and one car seat for little Alix. The trip was a bit of a marathon but definitely worth it.We have arrived

Another Rain Day. Thank Goodness!!!!

It's raining and just in time. The plants were starting to droop. Now I won't have to water them.

Spent last Thurs. Fri and Sat. with Sarah. Did a lot of vacuuming and mopping. Put the border up in the baby's room and organised the furniture and clothes. The baby will sleep with Joe and Sarah for the first little while, at least until he or she is sleeping through the night. The master bedroom is the only bedroom upstairs. The house was built by a couple with teenagers and their rooms were in the basement. Having a child was not part of Sarah's plans. Neither was termination. True to form she has put her best foot forward and is doing everything in her power to be prepared and welcome this baby. I am very proud of her!
Sarah looks great. Oddly enough pregnancy agrees with her. She has only gained 8 pounds and has a little "bump" for a tummy. As a matter of fact many of her customers at Second cup were surprised when she told them she was off for mat leave. Baby is due on the sixteenth. All day yesterday Emma kept saying "labour, labour, labour" , she was hoping the baby would be born on her BD.

It has taken me till yesterday to catch up here at home. What with grass needing cutting, the laundry, vacuuming and mopping, taking Ollie to the vet (that is a story all of it's own),Barbara having her hair done and getting ready for Emm's BD, there has been little time to spare.

Ollie....... last Monday(June 30) Ollie went missing. After three days we feared the worst. To every ones surprise and delight on Thurs. he dashed out of the closet in the landing upstairs when Anna was vacuuming. The skin above his right eye scraped off and his right front leg dangling. Arrangements were made to get him to the vet but he disappeared again. So Mon was the soonest we could get him in. Two hours later we were back home. Ollie had been examined, "put under" ,xrayed (the ulna between his wrist and elbow was dislocated and according to Ian our vet a most unusual injury) had his "bone" manipulated and put back in place (very painful to watch), splint applied and bandaged. Wish it could be that quick for humans.

This teapot was bought on ebay. All the way from China for Emm to make tea in at Uni. Forgot to ask the cup capacity. The parcel arrived on her BD. Excited I raced down to the post office so I could wrap it up and add it to the other Uni essentials Emm received for her BD. (desk fan, Brita water jug). Turn out tobe a bit of a joke. Barely holds the teabag.

We had an interesting experience last night. I heard Pup barking , looked out to see at what and saw Ollie running across the top of the garden and close on his heels was a fox. Not for long though, Pup soon put him in his place. "Escorted" him off the property he did. Yeah for Pup!, He always comes through. And to think the cats intimidate him all the time, always having a swipe at him with their sharp claws and he is 4 times their size. What a Grand dog.

This is Pup's favourite spot. He sleeps every night with either Anna or Emma.

Finally, it is raining. Which means I can't work out in the garden. Which means I can catch up on other things, like blogging.............and housework!!!!

David is in Quebec this week, leaving Barbara and I to our own devices. So a trip to Marlins garden centre was made. We were actually looking for a yellow climbing rose to plant on the south east corner to compliment the one we have planted on the south west corner, which after taking 3 years to establish itself is absolutely gorgeous. Sadly Marlins didn't have a yellow climbing rose but we managed to find other plants to our liking.

Since my last posting we have had a mother duck and about 8 ( they were hard to count) ducklings swim past several times. And the snappers have been laying there eggs again in the veggie garden. One in the row of carrots, one in the row of peas .

The raccoon has been busy emptying the bird feeders at night so we are having to take them in at night.

On the 12th we celebrated my 54th ( supposedly my lucky year because I was born in 54) at Mums. We had a lovely dinner, Ingrid went to a lot of trouble making sure everything was Gluten Free. With much help and support from Mum we had a lovely evening.

About 15 years ago we had about a dozen evening grosbeaks at our feeders at a time. Then all of a sudden they stopped coming. Last year we were visited by one but only for a day. This year we saw one about 2 weeks ago and today it has been at the feeder twice. Hope they are here to stay.

Wow this Friday is a double header. Emma graduates from college at 2p.m. and Anna has "her" prom. I say "her" because she has been to every prom since she has been in highschool. It's going to be quite the challenge fitting it all in and not upset anyone.

Sarah's friend Julie gave her a shower on Sat. Sarah looks so good. She has still only gained 3 lbs. and has a little bump. If there is one thing I could pass onto my daughters it would be my easy pregnancies and deliveries. So far so good. Sarah and Joe are still undecided about a boys name, ironic as a boy is what they are hoping for. Payton for a girl. A very old English name.

Called Scott yesterday and invited him and Jen for dinner. It was raining so figured having to work the fields couldn't be used as an excuse. What a surprise when he said yes!!!! We had Beef Pot Pie ( leftovers from the steak dinner on Sunday). Jen is a vegetarian so I made her tilapia fish marinated in fresh lemon juice then broiled with diced onions and tomatoes with a sprinkling of Feta, accompanied with assorted brown and wild organic rice, peas and carrots.
Had a comfortable visit. Amazes me how clever and astute Scott is at running the farm. Here he is at 29 and he is able to give full time employment to a man of 45.

It's raining!!!! Yeah!!!!! Seriously though, after all the snow we had it's hard to believe the ground is so dry. We are in desperate need of a good soaking. The rain started last night a slow steady rain perfect for soaking in. What's even better is the fact that we planted most of our veg. garden yesterday. Perfect timing.

Last weekend Margaret and Dom and Alix were here. Alix stayed an extra 3 days. Sunday after D&M left and after Alix had her nap we went to the Dairy Queen where Alix had great fun in the Space Gym. On Mon we went to Zellers and Winners and did some shopping. We actually went so Alix could have a ride on one of those kids rides outside the store ( you know the ones your kids begged to ride on and you wouldn't let them, but with grand kids its different ) but it was broken. We compensated with another trip to the DQ. On Wed. we met up with Dom in Kingston had dinner and we went back to our respective homes.

Rob called me on Saturday. He sounds so happy. What a wonderful feeling for a parent, nothing is better than knowing your child is happy. He passed his final exam for Hydro last Mon. with 82%. I am so proud. He was telling me that this position he has with Hydro is well received around the world so there is no end to the possibilities. However he has is eye on the Saunders Dam in Cornwall. To quote Robbie " I think it is much healthier living in Glengarry and cheaper. So it looks like he plans to return to his roots.

Emma and Derek left this morning (5:25a.m.) for Sackville NB. Emm is checking out the Uni and possible job opportunities. It is also a wonderful chance for her and Derek to get away . They have both worked hard at school and at Home Depot, they deserve a holiday.

Emma has decided to go to Mount Allison and is planning a quick trip down to Sackville May 19 -21 for a look see and to scout around for prospective job opportunities. Yesterday Emma and I applied for a student loan at Scotia bank. I have been refused because I don't make enough income. Bit of a Bummer!!!!!!!!

I forgot to mention that I ran 5K in the Run to End MS in Cornwall on Apr. 26. I did have to walk a few times, actually about 5 times but they were very short ones but fast paced. My time 35.15.4. Pledges 200.00. I am very pleased with myself.

Our new Post Box which David made and put up after his surgery. Started on the Fri. (three days after the surgery) by going to town to buy the lumber. Slowly but surely he did the job. "I didn't lift, I dragged." were the words of the day. He made many trips into the cellar for tools so he wouldn't be carrying anything to heavy. It took over a week to do but it kept him busy and feeling good about himself.

Life is settling down to a more normal routine. The weather has been great and the garden has taken priority over "blogging". David is off to Quebec for the rest of the week going via Ottawa to see Dr. McKendry. He, the DR. is ordering more blood work to monitor the hemoglobin levels and is organising an appointment with a hemoglobin specialist, he hopes within the next 10 days. Now we wait and see.

David has recovered remarkably from his surgery. Back a t work the following week. He paces himself.

Two weeks ago Barbara and I went to the Dollar Store and stocked "grand kid" stuff for summer visits. Butterfly nets, bug lanterns, binoculars, puzzles and bamboo fishing poles.

It's been an absolutely glorious day. Barbara and I basked in the afternoon sun for about an hour.

Lots of activity in the river today. The muskrat and a massive beaver have passed through.

Anna has decided to stay home for the rest of the week. She went to work last night and came home exhausted. I am worried as she is so very tired. Her days have been long ones, on her feet all day at the bank from 8:30 to 4:30 and then 4 evenings from 5:00 to 9:00 at the pub working in the kitchen, sometimes on her own. Quite a feat. As she says some days she is on her feet about 12 hours straight. Lets hope this respite will help.

I am so glad yesterday is over and David's surgery went well. Although one rationalises there is always the "what if" lurking in the background. When we arrived home David walked up to the top of the drive to get the mail and papers. It hit me after settling Barbara and David in and preparing dinner, I went to my room and had a good cry. I was afraid that once I let the flood gates open I wouldn't be able to stop them. But my chest hurt so much from the sobs I had too, stop that is.

Talked to Anna last night and again this morning. She sounds a bit better, but still fighting a cold. Worried about her.

Also worried about Mum. There are a few red flags re her finances and the paying of bills. Because Mum is sensitive and because she likes to keep things to herself I'm not sure how to handle the situation. Guess the best I can do is keep an eye out,pay close attention.

Didn't feel like it but forced myself to vacumm and dust the Sitting Room, the Library, David's room and clean the bathroom this morning.
Hoping to find time to get in a run. MS run next Saturday and I need to get in shape!

On the up side Barbara has decided to try wearing knickers again(instead of depends). It has taken a bit of experimenting but I think we have found a working dose/s of Metamucil and the trips to the bathroom are not so desperate.
And David, well you wouldn't know he had his gallbladder removed yesterday. He was up and going this morning, worked in his office sorting faxes and made a few phone calls and walked up for the papers. Th blood transfusion did a world of good. His hemoglobin count was down to 73, alarmingly low. I have suggested David talk to a Dr about having his blood tested every month and when the count gets to a certain level that he be given a blood transfusion. Although we were aware of his demise we didn't realise just how much he was being affected. It wasn't until after the transfusion that it was so obvious. Apparently there was a great deal of discussion about David and the polychondritis amongst the Dr. and nurses and they think it is the polychondritis that is reeking havoc with the hemoglobin. I already said that because of info on the Internet. He has called Dr. Edgar and has an appointment on Mon. The pain in his tummy started again and he has taken the tylenol 3. He is sleeping now.

I just called emergency to get a status on David. He had been transfered to Day Surgery and put us through. Barbara had a word with him. He is prepped and ready for surgery around 10:00. He sounde cheerful and appreciated the news about the mating mergansers and the siting of first swallow of the year. All good omens for the day!!!!!!

We have just left David at the hospital. The Surgeon's office called this morning to say they will be admitting David after his ultra sound (on his heart) and xray of his lungs this afternoon so they will be able to give him a blood transfusion before his gallbladder op..
Anna is home today. She has spoken with her co-op teacher and has explained that she is burnt out and needs to take a few days off. She has been burning the candles at both ends, she has a cold and is exhausted. She is off to Sarah's after work for a couple of days.
Feeling somewhat overwhelmed, worrying and seeing to everybody. Awww! well this to shall pass!!!!!!!!!!!

The Methotrexate has kicked in. David had an early night last night and this morning is feeling "off it"". There a small signs of another polychondritis flare up. Pain in David's neck and his nose.

We have a flood in the cellar this morning. Looks like I will be doing some "scooping" and dumping and then off to do the groceries.

We had fun at the fashion show. Very informal. Regular people modelling, having fun ,laughing at themselves. Anna looked like a natural and looked like she was enjoying herself.

Dinner was great, the chef came to our table to ask Emma about her allergies and very kindly made substitutes for her.

The evening ended with considerable excitement when dropping Mum off. Emma was very graciously carrying Oma's purchases in when she came running and screaming from the door parcel in hand followed closely by a SKUNK. It had found it's way in through Farley's cat door and was dining on Farley's food. So there we stood watching this skunk who wouldn't leave the garage when the alarm system went off. "Emma hadn't stopped t0 put her code in". By this time I found Oma's house keys in our car and went round to open up. You should have seen Oma explaining to the alarm people that she had a skunk in her house. Can't believe it didn't spray. Perhaps it is still dozy from it's long winter sojourn.
We checked the rest of the house for relatives and then gingerly searched the garage hoping he had left. We locked both cat doors, and bid Mum good night.
This morning at 7:30 Mum calls to say at 3a.m. she heard scratching and thinking it was Farley trying to get out, checked to find the skunk trying to get in. Not sure where the little bugger was hiding but he had never left the garage. Using the garage door opener she opened the garage door about 2 feet and went back to bed.
This morning she very gingerly got in her van and backed it out. No skunk.
So... what to do? It will be a nuisance not having the cat door. Aunt Silvia told Mum of a Digital cat door that responds to a signal from a collar on the cat!!!!!!!

Anna is modelling tonight (Urban Trade bathing suit)at the Ramada Inn, a fund raiser for Lift Off Cornwall. Looks like dinner out so we can support Anna on the walkway.

David had an appointment with the anesthesiologist yesterday. He gave him a thorough check up and has ordered a ultrasound of his heart and an xray of his lungs as he is worried about his shortness of breath. The anesthesiologist thinks the shortness of breath may be caused by the Methtrexate. I think damage was done to David's bronchi during one of his many polychondritis attacks. I have noticed for a while now that he easily gets short of breath. We are waiting for a call with an appointment, hopefully today or tomorrow, otherwise the surgery may have to be cancelled.

Thurs. today, Methotrexate day tomorrow. David appears to be waining. Tired looks a bit drained. The up side is that there are no flare ups.

Spring is definitely here. A "huge" beaver just made his/her way up stream.

Anna is awake after a long sleep this aft. She is not hungry and her back is still hurting although I do think she is standing a bit straighter. That is one thing about Anna, she goes to bed and sleeps when she is not well.

David spent most of the afternoon lying on his back on the floor trying to ease his back pain.

Tiff called earlier. She sounds a bit overwhelmed. Ben's Mum Sue has to return to Waterloo on Thurs. An appeal has been made to Jan for help.

Anna has come home early from the bank. Her back (which she hurt 2 years ago after a horse fell on her) is giving her a spot of trouble. She can hardly stand straight, it is uncomfortable to sit. She has had a Epsom salt bath and is resting. Actually I think the 4 Tylenol have kicked in. It has to be bad for Anna to take that many she avoids any kind of med if she can help it. A call was put in to Heather and she can see her tomorrow at 11:30.
David too has a sore back. This started this morning and seems to be getting worse. He too has gone to lay down. Bit worried about David, just get one thing sorted out and something else comes along.
Barbara has been following the suggestions Ingrid gave her re bowels and Metamucil. Definite improvement in that department. Trips to the bathroom are not so frequent, they are however still quite urgent and assistance is required in order to get there in time.
On the bright side I went for my run this aft. and the Sun is shining

After shopping David spent most of the afternoon sleeping and although his reaction to the methotrexate is not as severe it still leaves him feeling yucky. Sunday morning he was still feeling the effects of the Meth. but at least there is an improvement. What is even better is the painful flareups of vasculitis have been absent.
The news of Ben's stroke has taken it's toll on Barbara. It has been a trying weekend. However Tiff called with another update yesterday. Life Changes After Birth It was encouraging news so now we are working on getting back to "normal". I am feeling a bit tired, because David is not himself there is more for me to see to, but we are coping!
Sunday dinner was a bit smaller this Sunday. Audrey was not feeling well so didn't come and Emma had a monthly employee meeting at Home Depot after her shift so she wasn't with us. Chicken was on the menu.
This morning when we woke up the ice had gone from the river. Amazing how it is there when you go to bed and gone when you wake up. And in its wake a Mr. and Mrs. Hooded Merganser.

David has gone to Cornwall grocery shopping. Barbara feeling better after hearing from Tiff. Yesterday was very hard for her. A bit teary, wishing she could go and help Tiff.
David too was upset because he can't be of help.

Tiff called. Ben is even better. Last night Tiff and Clara and Pippa visited Ben in hospital. They all had dinner together and Ben played with the girls. Ben occasionally has trouble finding the odd word but speech much improved and he wants to go home. Always a good sign. He will stay in so they can do an EKG and an MRI. Ben's Mum arrives from Waterloo tonight.

Talking with Ingrid yesterday, she has had an incredible couple of days. She has been able to walk, albeit with her canes but she walked 3 blocks to her friend Marcy. She was too tired to walk back(Marcy drove her home) and she has been walking around her apartment using the walls. Not sure how long it will last but she is taking it for as long as it will.

Pup and I went for our afternoon walk and the wind was so chilly I had to wear my wind pants.....again. On the positive side the stream at the bottom of the garden is flowing freely and despite the cold wind there is melting happening. Yea
